Man is living on the
earth being inundated in the great ocean of air which is essential for the
existence of human life, plant life, and animal life. Without favourable
environment, weather, and climate, it would not be possible to create the vast
bio-diversity in air, land, and ocean. Only favourable environment, weather,
and climate can ensure a safe and risk free existence of life.
It is very unfortunate
that we take various elements from nature for our everyday use, but we do not
hesitate to destroy it indiscreetly. We are forgetting that by destroying the
balance of nature we are inviting ecological imbalance. And this ecological
imbalance is bringing about changes in the world’s climate and continuously
threatening the existence of our life.
There are many causes
behind this climate change. Among them greenhouse effect is the main cause.
There are also many causes for this greenhouse effect. The first cause is the
environmental pollution that is caused by the huge emission of carbon dioxide,
the destruction of tropical rain forests and burning down of fossil fuel. Rapid
growth of industry, unplanned urbanization, traffic, the use of CFC and methane
are also responsible for this greenhouse effect.
Today climate change
and its impact are the prime concern of the climatologists. They are noticing
gradual global warming around the world due to this climate change. If we fail
to check this global warming, the balance of the environment will break down
and the world temperature would be hotter day by day. There would be drought
throughout the world. Wildlife, forestry, agriculture, and fishery will be
seriously damaged.
The most alarming news
is that the ice in the arctic region is melting due to global warming resulted
from greenhouse effect. The melt of ice in the arctic region will invariably
overflow the banks of the rivers and cause frequent floods in the coastal
areas. As a result, many islands of the world, cities situated near the sea,
and many low-lying parts of the world including Bangladesh may one day go under
water. Undoubtedly, it is a great threat for the low lying countries like
Bangladesh.
After all, if we want
to prevent the harmful effects of climate change, we should take some necessary
steps immediately. Firstly, we have to stop greenhouse effect at any cost if we
want to stop global warming. We have to stop the use of CFC, the use of fire
woods, and bio-fuels. We must expand and strengthen the programmes of planting
trees, especially in the coastal areas if we want to save our beloved world.
Above all, we have to stop environment pollution and develop public awareness
to protect the environment.
