Bangladesh
is the most densely populated country in the world though it is a small country
of only 1, 47, 570 square kilometers. At present it has a population over 160
million. About 1000 people live per square kilometer here. Every year more than
two million people are being added to our population. Like other third world
countries, this problem arises mainly for illiteracy and lack of awareness. The
problem has now moved out of control, and it has now come to the stage of
explosion. As a result, the government has termed it as a number one problem.
It is high time for all of us to be aware of the consequences of this problem.
Though
the population of a country is an asset, it becomes a problem when the country
cannot afford to give its people the basic necessities of life like food, clothing,
education, medicine, shelter etc. There are many reasons behind this rapid
growth of population. The main reason is illiteracy, and religious
superstition. Early marriage, polygamy and dogmatism are also responsible for
this high growth rate of population. Last but not the least, the lack of social
awareness contributes much to overpopulation. The large population has become a
burden for the country. All development activities are restricted for this
overpopulation.
We
all know that the area of Bangladesh is too small to support its vast
population. In this country some people still sleep under the open sky, under
the large tree and at railway station. The present growth rate of population in
our country is very alarming. It is still 21.6 per thousand. It is obviously a
very high growth rate in the world. There are crowds everywhere in buses,
trains, bazaars, schools and colleges. This over population has already become
a burden for the country as ours is a least developed country and one of the poorest
ones in the world. In fact, our economy fails for this huge population.
This
over population is creating a serious threat to the development of the country.
Bangladesh cannot feed all her people properly because the production of food
cannot keep pace with her increasing people. As a result, there is the shortage
of food in our country. When a country has to remain busy to feed its people,
it is not possible for that country to implement any development programme. The
country also cannot provide job facilities for everyone. As a result, thousands
and thousands of people are out of work in this country. Thus the country
cannot meet up the basic necessities of life.
To
restrict the rapid growth of population some measures should be taken immediately.
Firstly, people should be made aware through education. Secondly, early
marriage and polygamy should be banned. Thirdly, the population that we already
have should be trained to make into skilled manpower and employed in income
generating activities. Besides, we have to export this skilled manpower to earn
foreign exchange. Finally, we have to export this skilled manpower abroad and
earn foreign exchange to boost our economy.
However,
though Bangladesh is a populous country, we cannot definitely say that it is
overpopulated. Because the country has a vast unexplored resources, By
utilizing those unexplored resources, we can overcome the problems caused by
the overpopulation. At any cost, we have to train up our manpower so that they
can evolve own technology to boost both industrial and agricultural production.
Above all, we have to transform our large population into an important asset.
